In the previous Concept, students carried out investigations and developed models to show the structure and function of organisms on the cellular level. They considered how the parts of a cell work together as a system, and how different cells have different appearances, which leads to differences in function.
In this cycle, students begin to consider higher levels of organization of multicellular organisms. They move from macroscopic to microscopic views of organs and tissues in order to see how cells are arranged into tissues that work together and are specialized for particular body functions. Students develop and use models of both the respiratory and digestive systems, considering how the subsystems within those systems interact to help an organism complete life processes.
After students develop a basic understanding of how normal bodily systems function, they can consider how disease can disrupt the systemic function of an organism.
