6th - 8th Grade Module 2 Concept PT

Cycle 1

How can we as architects and engineers design and construct a model house to minimize heat transfer.

Cycle Summary

In the Performance Task, students will answer the question, “How can we as architects and engineers design and construct a model house to minimize heat transfer?” To do this, students will be assigned a region of the world to design a house for.

Session 1
Elicit

Students identify variables that minimize or maximize thermal energy transfer. They apply that knowledge to define the criteria and constraints of a design problem.

Engage

Students design an energy efficient house based on the variables that will minimize thermal energy transfer, the criteria, and the constraints.

Session 2
Explore

Students construct and test the model house designed to minimize thermal heat transfer.

Session 3
Explain

Students will continue adding to their graphic organizer analyzing their variables given.
Students test the model house and graph the results.

Session 4
Elaborate

Students consider improvements and redesign the house, if necessary.
Students retest after making changes to the house design.

Session 5
Evaluate

Students are presented with a different biome/ environment and must explain any design change that would be necessary for the initial house design.
