Cycle Summary

Students make observations, investigate the products of respiration using yeast as a model organism, and develop models to show the chemical process of cellular respiration.

Session 1
Elicit

Students ask and answer questions about what happens after organisms like algae make food.

Students view a demonstration of a chemical reaction using a gummy bear and potassium chlorate and the burning of a food item to demonstrate the release of stored chemical energy from sugar.

Students complete an activity to observe cellular respiration in yeast cells and their production of a gas as it is collected in a balloon.

Students complete an activity to observe cellular respiration in yeast cells and their production of a gas as it is collected in a balloon.

Students watch a short video and read in order to describe the process of cellular respiration.

Session 3
Elaborate

Students work in groups to develop a model to describe how food is rearranged through chemical reactions forming new molecules that support growth and/or release energy as this matter moves through an organism.

Session 4
Evaluate

Students revisit their models of photosynthesis in order to add where cellular respiration fits into these models.

Students design an experiment to demonstrate the interaction between photosynthesis and respiration, and apply their knowledge to consider how temperature affects respiration.
